International English

You probably heard about this type of English. You will probably be surprised to read that no one speaks this language.

International English is not a natural language. It is a hypothesized convention mostly used in writing. On the one hand, it is used to express the function of the English language to serve as the modern global lingua franca. On the other hand, International English is a convention used when a large number of recipients with or without English as their mother tongue is supposed to read an English text.

To this day there is no clear definition what is or is not International English. Compare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_english.

In my work, when a client asks for a text to be written in International English, I always suggest to define the target group as closely as possible. Then the appropriate variant of “International English” and the required terminology and style can be easily determined.
